Letters to the World Reading, 8/23
Letters to the World: A Celebration of Women's Poetry

Featured Poets: LouAnn Muhm, Athena Kildegaard, Francine Sterle, and Argie Manolis

August 23, 2008, 6 p.m.
Magers and Quinn Booksellers, 3038 Hennepin Ave S, Minneapolis, MN

Letters to the World is the first anthology of its kind—a feminist collaboration born from The Discussion of Women’s Poetry listserv (Wom-po), a vibrant, inclusive electronic community founded in 1997 by Annie Finch. With an introduction by D’Arcy Randall and brief essays by the poets themselves reflecting on the history and spirit of the listserv, the book presents a rich array of viewpoints and poems.

Join us to celebrate Letters to the World, a remarkable example of how the Internet can radically influence poets, editors, and readers.

Inspiration by the Sea: a writer's paradise
Inspiration by the Sea is a writing intensive at a pristine, magical beach south of Puerto Vallarta for writers of all levels and of all genres. In the morning, we will gather for writing exercises to encourage our authentic voices to emerge. Between sessions, enjoy the beach or participate in Spanish lessons. Evenings we will gather to share our work. Individual critiquing is available, as well.
At Hotel Rinconsito, a family-owned hotel, we will be hosted with Mexican hospitality and home-cooked meals in family-style dining. Our bilingual host Alex Baez can guide you to Mayto's magical lagoon and exquisite beach.
The combination of camaraderie, deep contemplation, and Wendy's mentoring expertise, while embraced by the Mexican culture, will underscore the inspiration of being by the sea.

Book Release for Jarda Cervenka and Norita Dittberner-Jax
When: Friday, June 20, 7:30 pm

Where: Intermedia Art, 2822 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis 55408

Event: A short reading will be followed by refreshments and a book signing. Free & open to the public.

Contact: Joel Van Valin (editor@whistlingshade.com)

Fausto’s Afternoon by Jarda Cervenka

In his third collection, Jarda Cervenka shares his stories of the world. In settings that range from Prague to Kenya to the Colombian jungle, Cervenka celebrates discovery, friendship, and the ever-fascinating parade of humanity.

Jarda Cervenka's stories launch the reader on a mystery tour across landscapes by turns achingly familiar and alluringly exotic... These are international stories of our times, and no matter the setting—from Minneapolis to Prague to West Africa and beyond—once again Jarda Cervenka captures the heart. Surely his best collection to date.
— Patricia Hampl

The Watch by Norita Dittberner-Jax

Norita Dittberner-Jax has been widely published in the small press. Her book of poems, What They Always Were, won the Minnesota Voices Competition and was nominated for a Minnesota Book Award. She is one of the poets featured in Thirty-Three Minnesota Poets; her chapbook, Longing for Home, appeared in 2008.

In The Watch, Norita Dittberner-Jax’s devotion to poetry, to memory, illuminates each poem.

Asian American Poetry Reading: 1/25
On January 25th at the Loft Literarcy Center (1011 Washington Avenue S., Minneapolis) join us for a unique reading as California-based poet Lee Herrick joins Twin Cities poets Sun Yung Shin and Bryan Thao Worra for a free one-night-only performance starting at 7PM!

Each will present incredible work from their 2007 debut collections of poetry!

The event is free and there will be food and refreshments, door prizes and a chance to meet the authors:

Lee Herrick was born in Seoul, South Korea and adopted at eleven months. He is the author of This Many Miles from Desire.

His poems have been published in the Haight Ashbury Literary Journal, Berkeley Poetry Review, Hawaii Pacific Review, Many Mountains Moving, The Bloomsbury Review, MiPOesias, and others, including anthologies such as Seeds from a Silent Tree: Writings by Korean Adoptees, Hurricane Blues: Poems About Katrina and Rita. He has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and was a 2000 Los Angeles Poetry Festival Award finalist.

In Skirt Full of Black, Sun Yung Shin employs the techniques of investigative poetry and collage to craft a nuanced, unique language for navigating the politics of gender, ethnicity, and identity. As she spins new myths from Christian and Buddhist traditions and bestows new connotations upon the characters of the Korean alphabet, she gives voice to the spiritual and cultural hunger of those caught between the two.

Bryan Thao Worra's On The Other Side Of The Eye is the first book of Laotian American speculative poetry and is a journey to the hidden edges of the universe and the human soul, examining secret wars and ancient kingdoms, myth, history, science and dreams, drawing on over 17 years of his work that has appeared internationally.

We hope you'll join us for this unique event!

A Course with Sharon Chmielarz
Sharon invites you all to attend a class she is teaching at the Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts. In addition to being of value for those with "some writing experience," it should also be helpful for those with quite a bit more than a little writing under their belts.

The Physics of Poetry (see also www.banfill-locke.org)
Instructor: Sharon Chmielarz
Description: There are some perfect words, very few. One is “dwarf” which is perfect in that it hasn’t changed its meaning over the 2000 years it has been in use. Poetry has been around that long, too; but even longer, the principles of physics functioning in our world. Part of the poet’s job is to take a word or the everyday and make it more significant than a glance might make of it. Borrowing some natural rules like momentum, we’ll write new and improve old poems. We can check our poems in revision to see if they are as complete as they might be. Be prepared to bring poems to class and to write from suggestions; we learn from sharing.
Age/Experience: Adult/Teen, some writing experience.
Dates & Times: 6 Thursdays, January 24, 31, February 7, 14, 21, and 28, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Tuition: $83 Members, $88 Non Members

Heather Tosteson, Charles D. Brocket, Editors

In this anthology of personal memoirs, stories, and poetry contemporary writers explore themes of illness and trauma and the ways in which we respond to them. The book is designed to be read by the general public, and also in reading groups, writing groups, and support groups. 11/7 Poetry Slam -- Wadena
CALLING ALL POETS!
Be a part of Wadena Writers Week 2007 Poetry Slam.
Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. at The Cyber Cafe, Downtown Wadena

What is a poetry slam you ask? According to Wikipedia: "A *poetry slam* is a competition at which poets read or recite original work (or, more rarely, that of others). These performances are then judged on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience."

How does it work?

At a poetry slam, members of the audience are chosen by an emcee or host to act as judges for the event. After each poet performs, each judge awards a numeric score to that poem. Scores generally range between a low of zero and a high of ten. The highest scoring poets then go on to participate in elimination rounds until only one poet remains.

Poetry Slams are a nationally recognized art form, see http://www.poetryslam.com/ for more information.

Please call, email, or telephone if interested in participating.
If anyone has any questions about how it works, they can call or email me directly (218-632-2665 or
bookseller@borealisbookstore.com).

Creative Capital Foundation is a national nonprofit organization that supports artists pursuing adventurous and imaginative work in the performing and visual arts, film/video, innovative literature, and emerging fields. In 2008, Creative Capital will be considering proposals in the performing arts, innovative literature, and emerging fields.* Far from a traditional funder, Creative Capital is committed to working in long-term partnership with the bold and groundbreaking artists that we fund by making a multi-year financial commitment as well as providing advisory services and professional development assistance. We have a special interest in projects that transcend discipline boundaries and reveal something new about the moment in which we live. For more information, please visit www.creative-capital.org.

The Multi-Arts Production Fund is program of Creative Capital, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation. The MAP Fund supports new works in all disciplines and traditions of the live performing arts. Our aim is to assist artists who are exploring and challenging the dynamics of contemporary live performance. In contrast to the preservation of existing repertoire, MAP Fund supports those creating the art of our own time. For more information, please visit www.mapfund.org.

Please RSVP and refer questions to grants@creative-capital.org

* Performing Arts may include dance, music theater, experimental music performance, experimental opera, spoken word, theater/performance art, puppetry, and interdisciplinary projects.

Pavaroti Video Clip
If you google Una furtiva lagrima, thesecon entry (YouTube) shows a tab labeled Watch Video. Clicking on it, you will hear him perform the subject aria, his favorite (or so he has said), and he did that when he was as good to look at as to hear and still not as pretentious and still rising. Moreover, there is the added option of e-mailing the url to your friends at that instant. You can also copy the file, but the copy can be jerky. That is no big deal, if we can assume that YouTube is here to stay and will maintain the clip among its offerings.

Sconsolato, verseryder.

Uncontained, Writers and Photographers in the Garden and the Margins
LouAnn Shepard Muhm has a poem in this anthology, and will be reading at the following event (part of EcoArts 2007):

Uncontained: Writers and Photographers in the Garden and the Margins

Left Hand Reading Series is pleased to launch the new book, Uncontained: Writers and Photographers in the Garden and the Margins, with a reading by renowned eco-poets and nature writers Jack Collom, Merrill Gilfillan, Andrew Schelling, Jane Wodening, and more. Uncontained is a dynamic work published in Boulder by Baksun Books of more than 70 writers and 20 photographers from throughout the world. It is a celebration of cultivated Nature and Nature in the so-called “margins,” an ecology term for what is left of the wilderness and for those places where life defies cultivation and arises as surprise and renewal. (Flowers growing from a crack in the sidewalk, a patch of green between buildings in an urban area, a rusting water tank and the life that begins to appear there are examples of the “margins.”) The Left Hand Reading Series has provided Boulder with a venue for writers, poets and small presses since 1997.

Interspersed with the poets will be guest scientists reading from their research and other sources.

Saturday, October 6
